Youth and Valor is the singer/songwriter Courtney Saunders, with myself acting as occasional co-writer as well as producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist on her album “Some Satisfactions Are Permanent”. We started working together a few years ago with a somewhat vague notion of doing some music inspired by one of our all-time favorite films, Monte Hellman’s “Two Lane Blacktop”. The idea quickly progressed into an album project, and we eventually incorporated new songs and ideas that did not reference the film. The author Katie Crouch recently said this about Youth and Valor in the New York Times: “Her album is absolutely lovely stuff, sort of Mazzy Star meets sexy lounge singer. Absolutely perfect for wistful afternoons”.
